Goodness has been defined with many words, but it is generally acceptable as the quality of something. It could be a moral issue, academic, aesthetic, etc. It could also be virtuous like when we engage in a life-saving venture or act. It is always defined in our relationship with others. Goodness can also be equated with kindness, generosity, love moral excellence and quality service.

Whenever what we do for others is satisfying to the soul and life-saving, it can be termed to be good. and as they say, heaven is only for good people. So, let us live our lives with the hunger to do good. Referencing the bible, in Genesis 18. We are told that Abraham was good to the Angels who passed by his house, to promise him a child. Abraham saw them and decided to feed them without knowing that they were Angels. Therefore, as a great saint said, goodness is a weapon that conquers both the physical and spiritual activities. In other words, when you are good, what you do speaks for you and even protects you without you realizing it. So, it pays to be good because goodness brings rewards. We are encouraged to be good to our neighbours, the people we meet, the poor, the widow and the needy because whatever we have or whoever we are today, was made possible by God.

In reference to the bible again, we were told that when the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to ask Jesus to come heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they said” he deserves this of you because he is friendly towards our people. In fact, he is the one who built the synagogue”. Despite the fact that the centurion was not a Jew, because of his goodness, Jesus decided to go and heal his servant. We see here how the centurion’s goodness spoke for him.

Let us be good, humble and generous, more so, when we have the opportunity to put a smile on the faces of people who need our help. Let us not relent in saving lives, and more importantly when we are richly blessed by God.  Let us be the light to everyone we come in contact with. Apart from the fact that, the good we do may change a hardened soul. It can also motivate and when you do good to someone, you may never know what may come out of it. Sometimes the good we do bring us good luck and answers prayers. For instance, what the widow of Zarephath did for Elijah led to a great miracle in her life (1 Kings, 17).

So whether people appreciate it or not, do not worry. What matters is that we are touching people’s lives for good while preparing our lives for eternal life. Remember the saying that Heaven is for those who live a good life. Trust me, goodness can even improve your health because there is this inner satisfaction that you feel within yourself whenever you do good.  Let us always be good.
