Understanding that God calls us differently is the first step in appreciating that every believer has a unique role to play in His divine plan. Finding and fulfilling God’s calling is therefore not about comparing our journey with others but about discerning His will for our own lives and walking faithfully in it. For many people, the concept of a ‘’calling’’ from God is both deeply meaningful and a source of profound enquiry. It is logic that our life has a purpose, which is designed by a higher power, and that, our greatest fulfillment lies in discovering and living that purpose. Although the journey is unique to each individual, there are common themes and principles that can quide us. Besides, God does not make mistakes; He equips each person with unique gifts, talents, and opportunities that align with His greater plan. Therefore, discovering and fulfilling God’s calling brings joy, meaning, and eternal impact to our lives. When God calls, His calling
is a divine invitation to partner with Him in advancing His Kingdom. God’s calling is not limited to pastoral ministry or missionary work; it covers every area of life—teaching, business, parenting, leadership, creativity, service, and more. However, there is a common misconception that God’s calling is a dramatic and unmistakable experience such as, a booming voice from Heaven or a calling in a burning bush, like that of Moses. Although, this may not be the case always. For most people, God’s calling is more like a quiet, unfolding and holistic way of living that could relate to how God is shaping our character to be more like Jesuses, to be humble, compassionate and loving. His calling could also be through our abilities to recognize our talents and use it to serve others and glorify Him.
To find God’s calling is not a passive waiting game but a lively pursuit which requires a combination of spiritual disciplines, prayer, practical reflections, listening to God speak to us through the Holy Spirit, who reveals the truth about God and leads us into all the truth. The Holy spirit does not speak speaks to us of his own authority, but he speaks of what he hears and also tell us of things to come’’ (John 16:13). Therefore, we need to examine our desires as this will help us to identify what stirs our heart, the problems in the world which end up making us feel a deep sense of compassion. Recall however, that your talents and what stirs our heart often points to where God wants to use us thus, (1 Corinthians, 12: 4-7) says ‘There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same spirit gives them, there are different ways of serving, but the same Lord is served and so also, different abilities and the same God gives the ability to all the particular service’’ So, we need tolook at opportunities around us because God’s calling often aligns with the doors He opens, which no one can close (Revelation 3:8) but, when we are in doubt or not too sure, we ought to consult our mentors and spiritual leaders to confirm and guide our path.
Honestly, finding God’s calling is only half of the journey, the real test is in the fulfilling which is a lifelong process of surrender, obedience and action. Consequently, fulfilling God’s calling is not a race, it requires some preparations, growth and waiting for God’s timing therefore, we need to be patient with ourselves and with God’s timing. Sometimes, we may experience setbacks or make some mistakes, let us not be too hard on ourselves because, they are all part of the journey. But, let us learn from them and seek for forgiveness and keep moving forward. Ultimately, God’s greatest calling for every believer is to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and also to love our neighbor as ourselves. Truthfully, all specific callings, be it ministry, business, the arts or homemaking all, flow from God. Therefore,, as we walk daily with God and focus on becoming more like Christ and loving those around us, He unfolds His purpose step by step to us so that we are able to finding and fulfilling the unique purpose He has for our lives and align with His divine plan.
