Detachment Path to Contentment

If we are not detached, then we are attached.

The Holy Scripture says that we cannot serve God and Mammon together, we have to choose one.

Again, we are told that as a result of original sin we all have a disordered desire for earthly possession so it is natural, it is human to have that disordered desire for earthly possession, it is that tendency for self-love, thinking personal satisfaction, earthly possession even in opposition to God’s most loveable will.

The scriptures say that we are in the World so we cannot run away from being in the World but it also says that we are not of the World. This is an interesting conversation our Lord was having with His disciples.

Let’s look at 1st John chapter 2 vs 15-17, the scripture says, do not love the World for the things in the World. If any one loves the World; the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the World, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes , the pride of life is not of the Father but of the World and the World is passing away, so when we  make our choices, when we sit back to truly make that effort to make this detachment from the World, it will help if we know that the World will pass and that it is just temporal , but he who does the Will of the Lord the scripture says, will abide forever.

So, what are these things that we need to detach from those things that steal and compete for our precious time? In our World today, we have what l call, too much pressing of our phone.  We wake up in the morning, the first thing we do is to pick up our phone forgetting to say our morning prayers or devotion as the case may be. Maybe someone has sent us a message in the middle of the midnight but it is amazing that that is how much influence the phone has on us now. It is also important for us if we know this because it will be a lot easier for us to make conscious effort to create an order about how we use our phones.

You can prepare a timetable on how and when to chat with family and friends so that we can live orderly. The question is what do our children see us do, how do they see us manage this thing about phone? Are we modest, are we temperate and are we moderate in the use of the phone? If we are not mindful of the way we use the phones, how do we expect our children to be, so it is important that we create order in the way we use the phones.

If we don’t have control over our devices, if half the time we are on our phones how can we correct our children?  So. if we want to correct and control our children’s use of the phone, we must step back, examine ourselves and control ourselves and as they see us do it then it will be easier for us to guide them rightly.

Again, remember that the issue here is about those things that steal and compete with our precious time. Another question is, must we have every social media handle? The answer is No. Another thing is the Television, we are too glued to the Television these days, we find many series on the television and just with a click of the finger and you will be amazed that you can be jumping from one series to another for the whole day without realizing how much time you have spent watching the television and if you are not careful, you will end up not doing anything for the whole day. What is important is for us to get our priorities right. Remember that our challenges are different and it is left for us to identify our challenges and set our priorities right so that we don’t waste our time on those things that steal our time; these are what we need to detach from.

Time, they say is precious and it waits for no one and in the professional world it is said that time is money so, let us be mindful of that.

Another thing to detach from could be from too much drinking. Do we drink so much that we feel incomplete if we do not take a drink in a day? Or is it music, do we love music so much so that we are unable to draw the line between good music and ungodly lyrics? Is it fashion, are we the type that go crazy about the fashion that is trending and will have it at all cost? Let us be mindful of how we get attached to earthly things rather than to our Creator. Let us have a re-think and come back to our God and ask Him teach us how to be detached from the World.

Our prayer today will be, Lord teach us to number our days so that we may apply our hearts to Wisdom. Let Our Lord teach us how to number our days so that we will know those things that are important, those things that we need to attach ourselves to, so that we can give glory to God. (Psalm 90 Vs 12)

Remember, Moderation in all things brings Contentment and with Contentment comes Peace of Mind.
