A Christian is one who displays the character of obedience to the word of God. Obedience not because it makes sense or because it’s easy, but simply because it is what the Lord has said. As the song says, “Trust and obey, for there is no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey!” (1 Samuel 15:22).
Lesson; 1- Say yes to God: – Notice how they all blindly said yes to God’s message. Joseph didn’t ask why; Mary didn’t argue, and Abraham didn’t hesitate. The meaning of yes is give assent or approval, it’s aligning our will to God’s will. It can be tough to trust someone with zero reservations. Obedience is not always an easy decision however, we come out victorious when we obey God all the time. Jeremiah 29:11 says this beautifully, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. When our hearts say yes to God, He says yes to blessings our hearts need.
Lesson: 2- Obedience breeds humility: – “If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land” – Isaiah 1: 9. Peter was humble and he trusted Our Lord, we should emulate Peter and hear the voice of Jesus saying to us,” put out into the deep sea”. Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall [b]direct your paths.” When we trust God then we are well assured that He will direct our path meaning we are assured of victory each time. To not walk in obedience means then that we are walking in rebellion. God equates this to the sin of witchcraft. To rebel against God is to declare that you know better, it is to declare that God is a liar who does not fulfill that which he has promised. Obedience isn’t merely listening but applying God’s word. However, some believers read the good news but commit bad choices. Does that make any sense? “Why do you call me, “Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46).
Lesson: 3- Obedient and Dis obedient: – The Bible carefully illustrates the destiny of obedient and disobedient. The fate of the wise and wicked. The consequences of those who listen and those who ignore God. The decision of obedience has a dual effect. Each side may seem unrelated, but they are really two sides of the same coin. Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden for disobeying God. Eve disobeyed God because she obeyed the serpent’s suggestion. It took the Israelites longer to reach the promised land because of their rebellion towards God. Evil things occur when we disobey God. While good fortune attaches to us when we obey Him. In the desert, Jesus obeyed God by rejecting Satan’s temptation. When we say yes to the Holy Spirit, we’re saying no to our unholy flesh and vice versa. Thank God for the disobedience you may discover. Once identified, it can be removed. It’s like being on time for work. Punctual employees understand the concept of time while late workers ignore it. Still, a late worker can learn from their mistakes and improve their attendance. Confess disobedience as a sin. Our God is a merciful one. Ask Him for forgiveness and claim His promise of complete pardon. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (I John 1:9). God expects obedience (Deuteronomy 11:26-28).
It is good to be obedient in everything we do particularly, to God because it is the bare minimum of the Christian and spiritual life. God has been so generous to us and so we are already indebted to Him hence, we should not be expecting a reward from God because we are obedient to His commands. Obedience is an act of faith, empowering our covenant with the Creator. Jesus said in Matthew 17, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Nothing is impossible for those who are obedient in Christ. More importantly, obedience is the key to spiritual growth and it helps us to identify our will in everything with the Will of God.
